Gooch among nine Canisius athletes to make college commitments official Thursday

Nine Canisius student-athletes made their college commitments official Thursday morning during the high school's annual spring signing day.

All-Western New York volleyball pick Troy Gooch, the Monsignor Martin Player of the Year, is heading to Division I Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. Gooch goes to the Mastodons after compiling 569 kills in his third season as starter for Canisius. He helped the Crusaders win their 18th straight regular-season and playoff championship.

Swimmer Christian Balkin is heading to Canisius College. Teammate Christian Granato has committed to Cabrini, a Division III school near Philadelphia.

Jarrett Benton will play football at Morrisville, while teammates Brad Currell and Will McGennis head to John Carroll University, and Keenan Ollison to SUNY Brockport. McGennis earned first team All-Western New York last season in helping the Crusaders win the Monsignor Martin championship.

Allen Tompkins will play squash at Franklin and Marshall College. Two-year starter Brendan Trapper will play basketball and continue his studies at St. John Fisher College.
