Letter: Parolees who did their time should be allowed to vote

Parolees who did their time should be allowed to vote

Kudos to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for moving to restore voting rights to parolees. The 13th Amendment to our Constitution states: “Neither slavery or involuntary servitude except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” The 15th Amendment states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color or condition of previous servitude.” Prison is obviously “punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” Parole should be “condition of previous servitude,” therefore the right to vote should not be denied.
