20-year sentence ordered in sexual assault of 5-year-old

A registered sex offender was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old.

Thomas Johnson, 45, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl.

Thomas James Johnson, 45, formerly of Buffalo, pleaded guilty in March in Erie County Court to pursuing a course of sexual conduct with a child under age 11, a felony. The assaults reportedly occurred between August 2016 and February 2017, sometimes when Johnson was asked to babysit the victim.

He was convicted in 1996 of sodomizing a 10-year-old girl. Marshall spent six years in custody for that conviction and was released in 2001.

In addition to the 20-year prison term, Judge Sheila A. DiTullio ordered 20 years of post-release supervision and issued a 29-year-long order of protection to keep Johnson away from the victim.
