The Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health will observe Workers' Memorial Day on Wednesday with a rally in support of workers at Wendt Corp. in Cheektowaga.
Hourly workers at Wendt, a maker of shredding equipment, in June 2017 voted in favor of unionizing but have not yet reached a first contract with their employer. The rally will take place outside the plant, at 2555 Walden Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Workers' Memorial Day is observed annually around April 28 – the date OSHA began operating in 1971 – in honor of workers who died on the job.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 5,190 fatal occupational injuries nationwide in 2016, up from 4,836 the year before. Of that total, 272 fatalities were in New York State, up from 236 the year before.
