East's Willard Anderson shares Player of Year honor in Class D; Five others earn first-team all-state

The honors roll in for Western New York's boys basketball talents as the New York State Sportswriters announced its all-state teams for Classes B, C and D.

Willard Anderson of East was named co-state Player of the Year in Class D along with Moriah's Dylan Trombley.

Anderson led the Panthers past Moriah in the state championship game – snapping the Vikings' 45-game winning streak in the process. The 6-foot-2 Anderson averaged 25.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game for the Panthers. He recorded 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in the state Class D final, earning tournament MVP honors.

Anderson, who was named first team All-Western New York, isn't the only Class D player to be honored by the state. WNY placed three on the first team in this classification as it capped the season with three of the top five teams in the state poll. Anderson's East teammate Justin Allen (16.3 ppg, 11.0 rpg), Ellicottville's Elliot Bowen (19.7 ppg, 12.6 rpg) and Franklinville' Sam Erickson (22.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 6.5 assists) each earned all-state first team honors in Class D.

Franklinville's Isaac Kopp earned fifth team, and Ellicottville's Griffin Chudy earned seventh-team all-state. Honorable mention selections included: East's Jahahd Maryon and Waunya Shaw, Franklinville's Darren Clark, Sherman's Jared Gleason and Ellicottville's Austin Grinois.

Davonte Gaines of Health Sciences (Class B) and Devin Pope of Chautauqua Lake (Class C) each earned first-team all-state spots in their respective classifications.

Mike Schmidt of Olean earned a spot on the all-state second team in Class B. Other all-state picks in this class from the area are Cardinal O'Hara's Justin Hemphill (third team), Health Sciences Kam Briggs (fourth team), Niagara Catholic's Jalen Bradberry (fifth team), Gowanda's Nate Brawdy (eighth team), Springville's Mason Goodridge (ninth team), Medina's Jalin Cooper (10th team), Middle College's Hakeem Dobbins (11th team), St. Mary's Christian Szablewski (12th team) and Dunkirk's Devaun Farnham-DeJesus (14th team). The honorable mentions were Nasir Benton (Cardinal O'Hara), Chad Biersbach (Depew), Azyion Clemons (Middle College), Kyle DeVoogel (Newfane) and Max Weber (Newfane).

Others honored in Class C beside Pope include Randolph's Tyler Hind (second-team all-state), Tapestry's Dorian Plummer (third team) and Tariq Eubanks (sixth team), Allegany-Limestone's Sam Flanders (seventh team), Lafayette's Carlos Rosa (eighth team), Salamanca's Herecules Rasha (ninth team) and Allegany/Limestone's Michael Wolfgang. Class C honorable mentions from the area are Silver Creek's Jamani Benton and junior teammate Brady Woleben.
