The largest concentration of tall ships to come to Buffalo in decades will arrive in 2019.
Seven traditional rig-sailing vessels – expected from July 4 to July 7 as part of the "Port of Call: Buffalo" festival – will dock at Canalside and also near the Erie Basin Marina, Lighthouse Point and other nearby locations.
"What we are hoping to establish is a recurring signature event for the waterfront that provides a great experience for visitors and a family experience for local residents," said Michael Vogel, president of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association.
"For us, it's all about the ships and the link to Buffalo's rich maritime past," he said. "But it also brings a major economical impact, and puts the waterfront on the national ship visit map."
The tall ships extravaganza will be presented by Tall Ships America, a sail training organization. A special committee of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association will be the host of the event.
Tickets to tour the ships will be sold.
Event organizers also revealed news about another upcoming "Port of Call: Buffalo" event.
Racing fleets of tall ships will come to Buffalo for the first time in 2022. They're scheduled to return again in 2025, as part of bicentennial year celebrations for the Erie Canal, which was completed in 1825.
