Buffalo man rescued after fall into Letchworth gorge

New York State Park Police were called to help a man who had fallen into the Genesee River gorge in the area of the Upper Falls within Letchworth State Park early Sunday afternoon.

Eric Dumas, 31, of Buffalo had fallen approximately 30 feet, just above the brink of the 70-foot-high falls.

Park Police officers trained in high-angle rescue descended to the man for initial medical treatment and then packaged him in a rescue basket for helicopter extraction. Dumas was hoisted out of the gorge by a State Police helicopter and transferred to a waiting Mercy Flight helicopter for transport to Erie County Medical Center.

Assisting in the rescue were the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Management, Wyoming County rope rescue team and numerous Wyoming county fire and EMS services.

The circumstances involving the incident remain under investigation by the New York State Park Police.
