Two dates scheduled for free disposal of household hazardous waste

Erie County residents will have two chances this year to get rid of household wastes that cannot be thrown out in their regular garbage collection.

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning has scheduled free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days on June 2 in the parking lots at New Era Field in Orchard Park and Aug. 11 at the Erie Community College North Campus in Amherst. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Items that will be accepted include pesticides, fertilizers, pool and household chemicals and cleaners, oil-based paints, paint thinners, lead acid and rechargeable batteries, and oil, gasoline and antifreeze.

The sites will not accept latex paint, computers, appliances, pharmaceuticals, fluorescent bulbs, computers and other electronics, or commercial and industrial wastes. For more information, call 858-6800 or visit erie.gov/waste.
