Check on 'person down' leads to drunk driver pursuit

Buffalo police, responding to a call of a "person down" early Sunday, found a woman slumped over the steering wheel of a car at Humboldt Avenue and East Ferry Street, officers said in a report.

The police said they knocked on the car's windows and flashed a light in the woman's face at around 5:30 a.m., but once she came around, she drove off. Officers followed her with lights and sirens activated, but the driver would pull over only to drive away again, their report said.

The woman was finally stopped at Jefferson Avenue and Dodge Street, near Masten Park. She failed field sobriety tests and admitted to drinking, police said.

Charged with fleeing a police officer, driving while intoxicated and other vehicle and traffic law violations is LaToya Owens, 36. Police said she had an address in Cleveland, Ohio, but noted she has previous DWI convictions in Hamburg from November and in Erie County in 2008.
