A man who crashed his car into some bushes while exiting the Niagara Scenic Parkway in Lewiston was charged with driving while intoxicated and taken to an emergency room after police found his blood-alcohol level to be almost five times the legal limit.
The evening of April 10 after a caller reported to police that a driver had crashed into some bushes and backed into her car near Lewiston Road and Center Street. An off-duty officer who came upon the scene took the suspect's car keys before he could drive away, police said in a report.
Joseph J. Silvestri, 57, of Mohawk Street reportedly admitted that he had been drinking, but repeatedly responded "not much" when asked how much alcohol he had consumed. He failed several field sobriety tests, police said, then registered a reading of 0.39 percent on a Breathalyzer. The blood-alcohol level for legal intoxication is 0.08 percent or more.
Police said that, due to his level of intoxication, Silvestri was taken to Mount St. Mary's Hospital for evaluation. He later was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, among other offenses.
