This State Supreme Court is happy to paws for a special juror

Usually in civil matters that make it all the way to jury trial, the court seats six jurors plus one alternate to hear the case. This week, in State Supreme Court Justice Henry Nowak’s courtroom, there is an extra party in the jury box.

A woman on the jury is accompanied in court by her service dog, a medium-size brown pup who, unlike the two-legged jurors, is free to ignore the attorneys’ various, and yes, sometimes unexciting arguments in the auto-injury case that is being decided.

Nowak said his courtroom is just the one to accommodate the dog: The judge, law clerk, security officer and all of the other employees in the courtroom have dogs of their own, and they make no bones about adjusting breaks to keep this working pooch comfortable.
