The Teacher's Desk gets funding to distribute free books to students

The Teacher's Desk has been awarded a total of $12,500 by First Niagara Foundation and KeyBank Foundation so the store on Northampton Street can expand its literacy program.

The Teacher's Desk - where teachers of students in need shop free of charge for schools supplies, reading materials and classroom resources - will use the funds to acquire and distribute more than 250,000 new books and magazines, specifically music books and STEM-related reading materials.

"Both foundations have been very supportive of our goal of supplying needy classrooms in Western New York schools with high-quality reading materials," said John Mika, executive director of The Teacher's Desk. "Our teacher shopping program allows teachers the ability to grow their classroom libraries as well as send reading materials home with students, many of whom do not have books of their own."
