[BN] Blitz newsletter: Bills avoid Thursday night game in 2018 schedule

Richie Incognito didn't hold back last season when asked about Thursday Night Football: "Thursday night games, they suck," Incognito said after the Bills' 34-21 loss to the Jets. "They throw a wrench in our schedule. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to do this. ... It's completely unfair and bull----."

Perhaps someone at league headquarters was listening. The Bills were one of only two teams to avoid a Thursday night game in the 2018 season, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bills' complete game-by-game schedule can be found here. Jay Skurski went through and gave his way-too-early prediction for each game on the schedule, plugging for the Bills for a 6-10 record.

Bills draw Monday Night Football booking: The Bills will host the Patriots on Monday Night Football this season, but that is the only prime-time game on the schedule. The team isn't exactly must-see TV, Jerry Sullivan wrote.

Now to our reader question:

Bill Nelson asks: Vic, three of the top four QBs will attend the draft: (Sam) Darnold, (Josh) Rosen and (Josh) Allen. Lamar Jackson will also be there, which makes it four of the top six. Will any of these four suffer the fate of Brady Quinn? Is (Baker) Mayfield wise to avoid that potential humiliation?

Vic Carucci: I don’t necessarily think Mayfield’s motivation for staying away is fear of embarrassment. I sincerely believe that he wanted to be with family and friends in a more comfortable environment that would allow for more people than he could have surrounding him in the green room at the draft. Joe Thomas famously chose to spend Draft Day in a fishing boat with his dad, even though he would become a third overall pick.

There probably is more uncertainty about Mayfield’s status than that of the other so-called Big Four, something I’m sure he realizes. However, his makeup seems to be that of someone with supreme self-confidence. He’s on record as saying he doesn’t expect to go any lower than the fifth pick, and although that might be so much bravado, it would seem to indicate that he isn’t worried about falling out of the first round. If he genuinely is, then maybe that’s a sign of a more fragile psyche than you would prefer from a quarterback.

Speaking of the top quarterbacks: The Daily Drive Podcast spoke with former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky to break down UCLA QB Josh Rosen.

Rosen-to-Bills gains traction: In Mock Draft Roundup 5.0, it appears Rosen is becoming a popular choice for the Bills. Wyoming's Josh Allen was the most popular player assigned to the Bills in version 4.0.

NFL Draft Preview: Defensive end: Vic Carucci breaks down the top 10 defensive ends in the draft, headlined by top prospect Bradley Chubb of North Carolina State. The Bills lack depth at defensive end and could use a breakthrough season from former first-round pick Shaq Lawson, but they have several bigger needs to fill.

Ruben Brown, Donald Jones teaming up for "Buffalo Soldiers" podcast: Jones, the former co-host of "The John Murphy Show," will try to stay active on the Bills scene with a new podcast.
