An oil spill into Cayuga Creek in Niagara Falls led to the conviction Wednesday of a Delta Sonic employee in charge of environmental compliance.
Michael Yount, 46, of Lancaster, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wilford to making a false statement. He will be sentenced Aug. 23.
Prosecutors said the spill, estimated at between 300 and 500 gallons of waste oil, took place in July 2016 about a half mile from a Delta Sonic location on Niagara Falls Boulevard. They also say the company's oil change shop was undergoing renovation at the time.
Prosecutors said Yount misled state Department of Environmental Conservation officials about the extent of the spill and that his actions delayed the cleanup. They also say an absorbent boom with oil on it was found in the parking lot outside Delta Sonic's oil change garage.
