84 M&T Bank employees to honor Wilmers with volunteer work

M&T Bank's late chairman and CEO, Robert G. Wilmers, would have been 84 years old on Friday.

To honor his commitment to the community, 84 M&T employees will tackle a spring cleaning project Friday afternoon, in the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood on the East Side.

M&T said the volunteer activities will include landscaping, light construction, moving furniture and organizing sites throughout the neighborhood and along Bailey Avenue. The sites include community pocket parks and garden boxes, including the Bailey-Dartmouth Garden and Westminster Community Charter School teaching garden.

Wilmers had a longstanding connection to the neighborhood, starting with the revitalization of a school now called Westminster Community Charter School. He and his M&T team brought the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood model to Buffalo in 2012. Buffalo Promise Neighborhood aims to promote academic achievement and progress at three schools in the impoverished neighborhood. A fourth school is set to open in September.

Also Friday, the top of One M&T Plaza will be lit in the bank's signature green in honor of Wilmers.
