Fraud prevention comes to Orchard Park Thursday when AARP New York and the Erie County Parks Department will sponsor a free paper shredding event.
Shredding will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, or until the shredding truck reaches capacity, at Chestnut Ridge Park. The effort is part of a series of events providing free and secure destruction of personal financial records and other sensitive documents to help protect against identity theft.
New Yorkers registered more than 101,000 complaints of fraud with the Federal Trade Commission last year, including more than 20,000 reports of identity theft, according to AARP. To avoid having sensitive information compromised, security experts recommend shredding old documents containing sensitive information.
