DOT outlines Skyway detours at meeting Wednesday

Construction is to begin soon on the two-year bridge rehab of the Skyway, and that means lane closures and detours.

Motorists can get a firsthand look at the plans and detour routes and talk to Department of Transportation representatives during an open-format community forum from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Gateway Building, 3556 Lakeshore Road, Hamburg.

The $29.8 million maintenance project will rehabilitate the concrete deck, including replacement of bridge joints, and perform minor steel repairs during the next two summers.

  • During the morning commute, the inbound Skyway (Route 5) will be open, while the outbound will be closed.
  • During the afternoon commute, outbound lanes will be open, and the inbound lanes will be closed.
  • The road will be closed in both directions from 3 to 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon on weekdays when the switch in traffic directions is being made.

When the lanes are closed, traffic will be rerouted to local streets.

Two-year Skyway rehab will complicate life for commuters
