Kudos to state for supporting Children’s Psychiatric Center
Three cheers for Gov. Andrew Cuomo for doing the right thing for children and families in Western New York. Our hats off also to Sen. Patrick Gallivan and County Clerk Mickey Kearns, who led the charge to see to it that our children continue to get the highest quality of psychiatric care here in our region.
The decision to halt the plans to move the Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center into two floors of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, a facility designed to address the needs of adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses, took courage and was clearly the right decision.
As the physicians who are most intimately involved in the care of child psychiatric patients and their families, we strongly opposed this proposed move and are delighted that our patients will continue to receive developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed care by expert child clinicians and staff in a setting that was created for children, adolescents and their families.
Some issues take a long time to settle, but the state got it right with this decision, which maintains the position of New York and our Western New York community as leaders in the effort to support children and families living with emotional and behavioral challenges. Hail New York!
