Fate of controversial $35 million East Amherst subdivision could be decided Monday

The Amherst Town Board on Monday is set to review a controversial $35 million plan to construct 80 houses on 57 acres in East Amherst.

The Town Board last month held a public hearing on a request to rezone 49 acres at 284 New Road, near Millersport Highway, from suburban agricultural to residential.

The rezoning is required before Natale Builders can move ahead with its development.

But critics of the project have raised concerns about its potential effects on wetlands, drainage, traffic, pedestrian safety and wildlife.

The Planning Board in April 2017 recommended the rezoning. But neighbors have signed a protest petition, which means a Town Board supermajority must approve the rezoning.

The Town Board could vote on the request Monday, but officials were awaiting more information on sanitary sewer capacity in the area.
