Combative driver racks up felonies after driving into ditch

A driver who crashed his car and allegedly attacked his would-be rescuers was jailed on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond in Wyoming County after deputies finally got him under control.

An Attica police officer was the first to arrive at the scene on Dunbar Road in the Town of Attica, where a vehicle had gone into a ditch. When he and Attica Fire Department members tried to render aid to the driver, David F. Woods Jr., 46, of Olean. Woods refused help and punched the police officer in the face.

The officer used a Taser on Woods and the fire crew helped take Woods into custody. By then, Wyoming County sheriff’s deputies had arrived, but as they were directing Woods into the back of a patrol vehicle he kicked the Attica officer in the knee, injuring him.

Once at the Sheriff's Office, Woods refused to take a chemical test. He was charged with assault in the second degree, attempted assault in the third degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, DWI, refusal of breath test and traffic violations.
