Buffalo and Dortmund reaffirm Sister City connection

The Buffalo-Dortmund Sister City Agreement, which dates back to 1978, will be reaffirmed Monday morning by Mayor Byron W. Brown and Dortmund Lord Mayor Ullrich Sierau in a signing ceremony in the mayor's office.

The signing follows a weekend of activities that included a Saturday night reception and the start of construction of the $150,000 Dortmund Park project in the small triangle of land framed by Niagara Street, Busti Avenue and Hampshire Street.

The cities' program was the idea of Dortmund native Herbert Morgenroth, who arrived in Buffalo in 1972 as an exchange teacher at the University at Buffalo under a German exchange program, and began efforts to connect the cities.

Buffalo’s Sister City program boasts 19 cities in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
