A Tonawanda man pleaded guilty in federal court to distributing fentanyl in a case that started with an overdose death.
Dominique McDowell, 26, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of butyryl fentanyl and U-47700, a synthetic opioid.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul C. Parisi said the investigation began with the death of an Amherst resident, and an investigation determined that McDowell had sold the drugs to undercover law enforcement officers on five occasions in Amherst and the Town of Tonawanda. He also sold heroin to confidential sources on multiple occasions, according to Parisi.
The plea is a result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Amherst and Tonawanda police departments and State Police.
McDowell is to be sentenced July 28 before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
