Robber armed with knife thwarted by cool-headed cashier

A man with a small knife who tried to hold up the Arby's restaurant on Cedar Avenue in Niagara Falls fled empty-handed Saturday morning when a cashier threatened to call the police.

A light-skinned black male walked into the restaurant at around 10:30 a.m., ordered a coffee and then pulled a knife and demanded money when the cashier had her cash drawer open, according to police. The cashier told the man she was calling police, and he ran away, last seen going westbound down Cedar Avenue.

Police described the would-be robber as wearing gray sweatpants and a black hoodie, with a green/blue scarf over his mouth. They plan to check surveillance video to try to identify the man. Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 286-4711.
