Genesee Sheriff's Office identifies deputy who shot and killed armed man in Pembroke

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office on Friday identified the deputy who shot and killed an armed man this week outside a Pembroke restaurant.

Ryan W. Young, a six-year law enforcement veteran who joined the Sheriff's Office in 2016, fired the shot that killed Keith A. Kent late Wednesday, the agency said in a statement.

Deputies confronted Kent outside the Indian Falls Log Cabin restaurant after receiving a report of an armed man who had threatened customers.

“Law enforcement officers go to work every day knowing that they may be required to sacrifice their own lives, or take the life of another human being, in order to fulfill their obligation of protecting the citizens of our communities," said Sheriff William A. Sheron, Jr. "Deputy Young’s actions on Wednesday night did just that.”
