Rep. Chris Collins may face an opponent in the Republican congressional primary for the 27th District on June 26.
Frank C. Smierciak II filed petitions with the state Board of Elections indicating his desire to face the incumbent Collins, though he must survive any challenges.
Collins’ Democratic opponent, Grand Island Supervisor Nathan D. McMurray, asked Collins to avoid action invalidating the 1,000 plus signatures Smierciak collected to get on the ballot.
“I’m hoping Chris does the noble thing and take the lawyers out of this,” McMurray said. “He should get up on the stage, just like I did, and face his young challenger.
“Collins should take him seriously,” he added. “Frank might win.”
