The first softball game of the season for defending Section VI Class AA champion Williamsville North featured a rainy and windy warmup. But the weather took a turn for the better as the Spartans celebrated a 6-0 win in ECIC I over visiting Clarence under sunny skies Thursday.
"It really paid off to have the turf field," North coach Michelle Switzer said. "It rained quite a bit in Williamsville, so we were very fortunate."
North scored two runs on errors in the opening inning, added another run in the second and then two more on a two-out triple by Rachel Dimitroff in the third. The Spartans added another run in the fourth.
The offensive support was more than enough to make a winner out of freshman Sarah Parzych. She scattered three hits and struck out two in her first game.
"Our defense really did come up with some nice plays backing her up," Switzer said.
Abbey Hinkley finished with two hits for North.
