The Lockport Police Board voted Monday to ask the International Association of Police Chiefs to assist the city's search for a new police chief.
The search, however, will be restricted to New York State residents, said City Clerk Richelle J. Pasceri.
The association would screen applications and conduct background checks on candidates, Pasceri said.
The job has not yet been formally posted, but Chief Michael F. Niethe has said he will retire about July 1. The city previously restricted candidates for chief to Lockport captains only, but changed its civil service rules last year.
The search service still must be approved by the Common Council. The association quoted a $43,000 price tag for a national search, but a search limited to New York may cost less, Pasceri said.
