The recent arrival of twin Elton John tribute albums "Revamp" and "Restoration" finds popular artists covering the songs of John and Bernie Taupin, setting the stage for John's farewell tour, which stops at KeyBank Center on Sept. 15. I endured both albums to cherry-pick the best for you.
Queens of the Stone Age, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
Outstanding in conception and execution. The highlight, by a long shot.
The Killers, "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters"
A tender and surprisingly straightforward take on one of John and Taupin's finest.
Q-Tip & Demi Lovato, "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart"
This shouldn't work, and yet somehow, it does. The backing track is pure Tribe Called Quest. Fun.
Don Henley and Vince Gill, "Sacrifice"
This country-ballad take on one of John's best ballads shows off Henley's still-gorgeous voice to moving effect.
Kacey Musgraves, "Roy Rogers"
Musgraves breathes subtle sensuality into this oft-overlooked "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" gem.
