Hamburg Police Chief Gregory Wickett is warning residents of clever telephone scams that trick people into sending money.
"It breaks my heart every time I read one of these reports where people have sent them thousands and thousands of dollars," he said at Monday's Town Board meeting. "Those are the people who are reporting it to us. We suspect a lot of people are embarrassed and never do make the report."
Popular scams involve callers announcing the homeowner has won a sweepstakes and must send taxes or processing fees to receive it, impostor IRS representatives telling victims they owe money, or callers pretending to work for Microsoft and reporting a virus on the home computer.
If it doesn't sound right, just hang up, Wickett said.
