Man pulled from Millersport Highway apartment fire

An unresponsive man was pulled Tuesday morning from an apartment fire on Millersport Highway in Amherst, Eggertsville Fire Chief Kiel Gentry said.

Firefighters worked to resuscitate the victim, identified only as an adult male, who was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, Gentry said. The man's condition was not known early Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started at around 11 a.m. in a second-floor apartment at 780 Millersport, a four-unit building that's part of an apartment complex located about 1/3 of a mile north of the intersection of Millersport, Eggert and Longmeadow roads.

Initial reports indicated there may have been multiple people inside the burning building, but firefighters found only one victim, who was in the apartment where the fire started, Gentry said.

The fire spread to the other second-floor apartment. A damage estimate was unavailable and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Gentry said.

Millersport was closed to traffic between Eggert and Westfield Road, Amherst police said, but was open as of 1:30 p.m.
