Buffalo's Joe Reed headlines a list of Western New York area boxers who earned spots into the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions during the event finals at Buffalo RiverWorks.
Reed won his second New York State Golden Gloves title in three years Sunday by taking down defending champion and friend Elon DeJesus of Dunkirk via 4-1 decision at 123 pounds in the open division. It's the third straight year the two 24 year olds have met for the title.
"It was a close fight just like all of their fights have been," Don Patterson said. "It could've went either way. The judges saw it as a close one."
All open division champions advance to the national tournament, May 14-19 in Omaha, Neb.
Reed isn't the only area boxer with national experience who earned a spot in the tournament.
Geffred Nygayot of Buffalo PAL boxing defending his 132-pound championship by taking out Shamar Lutchman, 5-0.
Last year's 123-pound sub novice champion Samir Alowbali dropped down into the open 114-pound weight class this year. The Northwest Buffalo Community Center boxer produced winning results again, taking the championship bout 5-0. The only difference was this year's Gloves title secured a berth into nationals.
