Letter: We have many gun laws but they aren’t enforced

We have many gun laws but they aren’t enforced

In a letter titled, “Bipartisan solution is required on gun issue,” the writer makes reference to the NRA wielding so much power that it influences our legislators to allow automatic weapons.

The fact is he is uninformed, like most people who do not exercise their Second Amendment rights. The truth is that there is already a ban on automatic weapons and has been for over 30 years. We already have all the necessary laws on the books regarding guns. The problem is that the laws are not enforced.

Laws do not stop criminals from doing bad things. Criminals do not follow the laws! There are examples in the local news every week about bad people committing crimes with guns and those guns are almost always stolen and when caught these criminals receive a slap on the wrist.

Making something illegal will never solve the problem. Look no further than the opioid crisis. The last time I checked, heroin was illegal, yet we have people dying every day. In one year, drug overdoses killed more Americans than the entire Vietnam War.

So go ahead and protest the NRA. Go ahead and create all the gun laws you want. The shootings will continue and even get worse. Or you can address mental health issues and make schools a hard target by providing our children with proper security. The choice is yours but choose wisely. Our children are depending on you.
