Letter: Trump’s deferments reveal a lot about him

Trump’s deferments reveal a lot about him

A recent contributor to this column should have checked his facts before he questioned why our former president had not served in any branch of the service.

On Dec. 1, 1969, the Selective Service System conducted two lotteries to determine the order of call to military service in the Vietnam War for men born from 1944 to 1950. President Barack Obama was born in 1961 and therefore only a child at the time of the draft, while our current president was eligible for the draft but received multiple deferments, some questionable, to avoid military service. The real question, then, is not who served as much as who avoided service.

Never forget, either, Trump’s televised contention that being a rich playboy in New York City facing the possibility of STDs was the equivalent of being in Vietnam. “I felt like a great and very brave soldier,” Trump told Howard Stern. I wonder how many disabled veterans feel about that comparison.
