WNED-TV is the winner of a statewide media award for a digital series showcasing local Vietnam veterans and others affected by the war.
The public television station was recognized for Outstanding Use of Digital Platforms in the New York State Broadcasters Association’s 52nd Annual Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting competition.
The series, "Our Vietnam Voices," includes stories told through a combination of videos, photos, and written word that show the continued impact of the war on Western New York and Southern Ontario.
In the series, University at Buffalo graduate students studied 117 Vietnam veterans for possible post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth. The series also covered a pioneering Veterans Treatment Court program in Buffalo that offers an alternative to jail for veterans in the criminal justice system, and included the story of a family that fled Vietnam in 1980 and built a successful life in Buffalo.
The award will be presented at a luncheon April 30 in Syracuse.
