At a news conference Friday, Niagara County officials urged residents to sign up for organ and tissue donation.
"This is a passion of mine," said County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski, who choked up as he recalled a friend whose life was saved by a heart transplant.
"We're low in donors for some unexplained reason," said Sheriff James R. Voutour, whose daughter's torn knee ligament was replaced with donated tissue.
Amanda Farrell, director of blood donor recruitment for Unyts, said forms are available through the Unyts and Department of Motor Vehicles websites, although the organ donor heart symbol won't show up on a driver's license until its next renewal. About 33,000 enhanced licenses are due for renewal in Niagara County in the next three years, Jastrzemski said.
