Colleges: Former St. Joe's hockey star Dennis Gilbert playing for NCAA championship

Former St. Joe’s Marauders defenseman Dennis Gilbert and Notre Dame men’s hockey will play for an NCAA national title tonight at XCel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The Fighting Irish, gunning for their first championship, face Minnesota Duluth at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Notre Dame, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated Michigan 4-3 in Thursday’s semifinal thanks to a Jake Evans goal in the final six seconds of regulation. Minnesota Duluth defeated Ohio State, 2-1, in the other semifinal. The Bulldogs won the NCAA title in 2011 but fell in the semifinals last season.

Gilbert, a defenseman and 2015 Chicago Blackhawks draft pick, has four goals and six assists in 38 games this season. He has two shorthanded goals this season, making him only defenseman in the country with more than one.

Women’s lacrosse

UMass 18, St. Bonaventure 4: The Bonnies gave up three goals each to Hannah Burnett and Kiley Anderson to fall to 0-11 and 0-3 in Atlantic 10 play this season.

UMass scored eight in a row to start the game before Rylee Arnold got the Bonnies on the board at the 16:50 mark of the first half.

St. Bonaventure will host VCU Sunday in its fourth straight A-10 battle.

Tennis

St. Bonaventure and Niagara split the schools' men’s and women’s tennis matches on Friday. The Bonnie men defeated Niagara 5-2, while the Niagara women defeated the St. Bonaventure 5-2.

Baseball

St. Joe’s 6, St. Bonaventure 5, ppd.: The Bonnies and Hawks played to the bottom of the 7th inning last night but moved the completion of the game to Saturday due to snow and high winds.

The teams will finish the game at 1 p.m. Saturday and then play the previously scheduled matchup afterward.

Niagara (7-13, 2-2) vs. Iona (7-13, 2-2): The Purple Eagles kick off their home schedule Saturday at the newly renovated Bobo Field. Niagara and the Gaels will play a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader, with action kicking off at noon.

Niagara infielder Greg Cullen is leading the nation with a .513 batting average. He also leads the conference in home runs (three), on-base percentage (.575) and slugging percentage (.750).

Softball

University at Buffalo (13-17, 5-3) at Central Michigan (14-15, 4-3): The Bulls and Chippewas will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. after Friday’s meeting was postponed due to weather.

The matchup originally scheduled for Friday was moved to 1 p.m. Sunday because the teams were already slated to play a doubleheader Saturday. The second game begins approximately 30 minutes after the first one.

UB is riding a two-game win streak after sweeping Akron Tuesday.

Men’s lacrosse

Canisius (5-4, 2-0) vs. Detroit Mercy (4-6, 2-1): The Golden Griffins, currently tied with Quinnipiac at the top of the MAAC standings, welcome a Titans team that sits a half game behind them at 7 p.m.

Canisius is coming off Saturday’s 16-5 win over Marist.
