The Opening Ceremony of 2018 Dyngus Day Buffalo Festival, including the traditional Blessing of the Instruments at the Pvt. Leonard Post VFW, 2450 Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga, takes place at 7 p.m. on Easter Sunday.
This tradition of blessing the instruments of the many polka bands who participate in Dyngus Day began in 2007 and is said to be a much anticipated event by musicians and polka fans alike.
Dyngus Day is a Polish-American celebration of the end of Lent restrictions and the joy of Easter. Buffalo has become known as the Dyngus Day Capital of the World, celebrated in the city's old Polonia neighborhood, Cheektowaga and other locations.
The Dyngus Day parade begins at 5 p.m. on Monday, starting in front of Corpus Christi Church on Clark Street before heading down Broadway to Fillmore and then Memorial Drive. It concludes at the Central Terminal.
