Jim Kelly’s recovery from cancer surgery continues to go well, according to an update provided Friday by his operating surgeon.
“Mr. Kelly continues to recover well,” Dr. Mark Urken said in a statement released by Mount Sinai West Hospital. “In addition to his own incredible toughness, he is surrounded by an extraordinarily supportive family.”
Urken performed a nearly 12-hour surgery Wednesday on Kelly to treat the recurrence of oral cancer. Using a technique called microvascular reconstruction, Urken inserted a portion of Kelly’s fibula – along with attached soft tissue and blood vessels – into his upper jaw.
“We successfully removed Mr. Kelly’s cancer from his upper jaw and lymph nodes from his neck,” Urken said.
Kelly’s wife, Jill, asked for continued support.
"There is a long road to full recovery ahead,” she said in the statement. “Our family would appreciate your continued prayer support. Thank you!"
