Can two farmers markets compete in Clarence?
Benderson Development wants to open a farmers market Wednesday evenings in its Eastgate Mall parking lot at 5183 Transit Road. A public hearing on the plan is set for April 25.
But the Clarence Hollow Farmers Market, an all-volunteer organization which has run a farmers market in the town for 15 years, is afraid Benderson's deep pockets could cut into its profits.
Benderson has proposed operating its market from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings from May through October. The Clarence Hollow Market is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at 10717 Main Street. Benderson representatives told the boards that they chose Wednesdays so as not to compete with other area markets.
Clarence Hollow's Farmers Market treasurer John Learner said he fears Benderson will want to expand to Saturdays as the company does in East Aurora.
