Dr. Nelson L. Banks, owned Dunkirk ophthalmology center

May 15, 1942 – March 27, 2018

Dr. Nelson L. Banks of Amherst, a retired Dunkirk ophthalmologist, died Tuesday in Buffalo General Medical Center following complications from surgery. He was 75.

Born in Williamsport, Pa., he grew up in Milton, Pa., and graduated from Wyoming Seminary. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and earned bachelor of science and medical degrees in 1968 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He served in the U.S. Army for three years in Germany, and trained in Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City before moving to the Dunkirk/Fredonia area.

Dr. Banks operated the Banks Eye Center in Dunkirk and eye studio locations in Jamestown and Buffalo from 1976 to 1991, when he suffered a stroke and was unable to continue in his profession. He and his wife, Rosemarie, moved to Buffalo in 2006.

He enjoyed golf, and was a member of Moonbrook Golf Club in Jamestown and Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk.

In addition to his wife of nearly 48  years, he is survived by his son, Nicholas, and two daughters, Rebecca Jurdjevic and Natalie Banks.

A service was held Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
