A fledgling Allentown sandwich bistro specializing in meatballs has closed and the business is for sale.
Seven months after owners Dennis Glenn and Bobby Burns opened A Street Meatball Market at 23 Allen St. -- betting on additional business from the nearby Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus -- it folded after struggling to make ends meet, Glenn confirmed Wednesday.
The 14-seat eatery opened Aug. 10, amid hope of capitalizing on the growing campus and vibrant Allentown neighborhood. But business dropped off in the fall and beyond a one-hour lunch rush, didn't see much activity, he said.
The business was on the street level of the Fairmount Apartment building at Allen and North Pearl streets next to Caffeology. It was listed for sale Tuesday for $75,000.
Glenn said the bistro was forced to close its doors March 9, on National Meatball Day of all days.
"We just didn't have the money to keep it going," he said. "We just went further and further into debt. They always say 'location, location, location' and we put all our emphasis on the Medical Campus, but it didn't draw the business."
The owners had applied in February with the city for approval for a liquor license but never pursued it, given the decline in business.
