Every news organization makes mistakes, and the best run corrections promptly.
So we weren't surprised to see a correction in the Feb. 21 edition of the Amherst Bee.
But the date of the mistake caught our eye: Feb. 7, 1968, 50 years ago.
That was when the Bee ran an item noting that Mr. and Mrs. Howard Baker were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.
Just one problem: Their last name is Bakert, as customers of Bakert's Food Shoppe, the Eggertsville delicatessen run by the late Howard and Jane for about 50 years, would know.
Apparently, no one pointed out the mistake the first time around. The Bee, however, has a regular "Out of the Past" column that highlights news from 125, 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago. The anniversary announcement ran again in the Feb. 7 edition, and that's when the couple's daughter-in-law, Deborah, noticed the error.
"A lot of people know Bakert's," said Deborah, and a few friends also called her to point out the mistake.
She called the Bee, and that spurred the correction 50 years in the making.
