5k run at Galanti Park to promote domestic violence awareness

Plans for a 5K run in June to promote domestic violence awareness were aired Monday night by Lackawanna lawmakers.

The inaugural Ashley May run is planned for 10 a.m. June 24, stated Andrea Kwasniewski, race director and mother of Ashley M. Whiting, who died in a domestic violence stabbing in July 2015. Daniel Whiting, her husband, was convicted of murder in the incident that occurred in their Lackawanna home.

The run will begin and end at Galanti Park on Martin Road. It will take place on what would have been Ashley's 24th birthday, Kwasniewki said in a letter to the City Council.

Funds raised will benefit Haven House, a shelter for domestic violence victims; and the Chase and Mayci Foundation. Chase, 4, and Mayci, 2, are Ashley Whiting's children. They are being cared for by Kwasniewski.

Daniel Whiting is currently serving a 25-years-to-life sentence.
