Americans must demand sensible gun control laws
Self-inflicted genocide: The American love affair with weapons overshadows the protection of innocents. We are slaughtering ourselves, and in the eyes of the world America is not great. Our spineless politicians dispense the same platitudes but no solutions. It’s time the American people pushed back, and we can begin by voting against any politician taking campaign funds from the National Rifle Association. Contrary to this organization’s propaganda, the 2008 Supreme Court decision was not open-ended. Exceptions to gun ownership are unusual, and dangerous weapons and sales are prohibited to individuals with mental illness.
Military-style assault weapons need to be banned from general public consumption. While people suffering mental illness can indeed be violent, there is no amount of destruction they can perpetrate without weapons that fire multiple rounds with ease. They can commit assaults but not massacres. The issue is easy accessibility to weapons made for mass destruction in military combat.
We need laws to prevent gun manufacturers from selling these weapons to individuals with no military organization credentials. Purchases should be carefully vetted. Law enforcement needs to confiscate existing assault weapons through manufacturer’s sales data bases and the weaponry could be compensated in a buy-back program. A multipronged gun registry needs to be established and monitored.
This will require more manpower and funding, but why waste money to build a wall to keep people out when the enemy is in our midst? I encourage every citizen to stand up for our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness instead of accepting what has become commonplace murders in our most public venues.
