State Police: Amherst man taken into custody after Thruway shutdown

An Amherst man has been taken into custody by State Police after the Thruway was shut down in both directions for more than four hours Monday between the Batavia and LeRoy exits, State Police said.

State Police were sent to that area of the Thruway about 1:15 p.m., after receiving a report of an allegedly emotionally disturbed man who was possibly operating an SUV near the Town of Stafford, State Police said. Troopers located the vehicle with the man inside.

The man allegedly refused to pull over after police attempted to stop the vehicle, according to a news release from the State Police.

After a short police pursuit and lengthy negotiations that followed, the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody before being taken by ambulance to a hospital for evaluation. No injuries were reported, police said.

The man's identity was not released Monday.
