An Elma man faces felony charges in connection with a collision in June involving two bicyclists.
Michael Zaenglein, 62, was arraigned Monday in Erie County Court on an indictment charging him with vehicular assault in the second degree and driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs.
Zaenglein allegedly was on morphine and diazepam when he was driving his pickup on Clinton Road near Townline Road at about 10 a.m. on June 30. The truck veered onto the shoulder of the road and struck two bicyclists. One of the victims was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center with multiple injuries and remained in a coma for nearly a month, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Judge Michael Pietruszka allowed Zaenglein to remain free on $2,500 bail previously posted in Elma Town Court provided that he doesn't drive. His license has been suspended.
