It was a foregone conclusion Sabres winger Evander Kane would be traded before the 3 p.m. deadline Monday. The questions were more about what first-year Buffalo GM Jason Botterill could fetch in return for the mercurial forward.
When Botterill sent Kane to San Jose in exchange for two conditional draft picks and prospect Danny O'Regan, Buffalo Twitter was quick to evaluate the trade and offer parting words to Kane.
Here's a mixture of funny, heartfelt, elated and doomsday tweets from the local hockey peanut gallery:
Evander Kane is more toxic than Buffalo fans are willing to admit. They got assets for a cancer. Be happy and move on.

Hate to say it but Botterill got the best he could for Kane. Teams weren’t lining up to over pay for him based on his time in Winnipeg and his off ice issues here.

Evander Kane has three straight 20-goal seasons. In a 12-month period that ended in mid-december, he was 2nd in NHL to Auston Matthews in even-strength goals. If this is all he's worth as a rental, every NHL GM must view him as the biggest pariah in the league. #Sabres

Looks like Kane will finally make the playoffs.

When the Sabres traded for Kane, I said it would be the defining move of Murray's tenure as GM. Today sort of puts a bow on his disappointing reign.

1-2-3 for Tartar man people must really hate Kane

What a sad day. Absolutely awful trade. Probably just a late second round pick for Evander Kane. Brutal.

The return for Kane isn't the best, but it's definitely the best offer we got so people bashing Botterill can stop. Trades are two-sided.

Idk why Buffalo is upset. We over valued Kane like we do with all athletes in Buffalo. He has more flaws than upside.

Maybe Kane resigns here and then we win the trade.

I'm sure Kane will re-sign with San Jose to help the Sabres out of the kindness of his heart.

This Evander Kane deal is an absolute joke

Evander Kane for a 2nd next year, a 4th in two years and one of Eichel's buddies from college? What an underwhelming return. We've sucked for years, currently suck and are set to suck for the foreseeable future. Screw Tim Murray for putting us in this position. So disheartening.
