After adding Rick Nash on Sunday morning, the Boston Bruins signed former Sabres captain Brian Gionta for the remainder of the season. The deal is worth a prorated $700,000.
Gionta just returned from the Olympics, where he served as captain of the U.S. team. The 39-year-old had no points in five games.
Gionta had 15 goals and 35 points while playing in all 82 games for Buffalo last year. The right winger has played in 1,006 NHL games with Buffalo, Montreal and New Jersey, totaling 289 goals and 299 assists for 588 points. Gionta has also skated in 112 postseason games, posting 32 goals and 36 assists for 68 points.
Gionta played with Bruins assistant coach Jay Pandolfo on the 2003 Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils.
It was not immediately known if Gionta will play for the Bruins when they visit the Sabres at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Gionta is familiar with Boston after playing for Boston College from 1997 to 2001.
