David R. Kinyon, president of the city agency overseeing Lockport's 19th century Erie Canal locks, said this week that the third of the Flight of Five locks will be restored to working order after the canal closes this fall.
A state Canal Corp. spokeswoman said the canal's navigation season will end Oct. 10, about three weeks earlier than usual. Kinyon said that will allow more time for the Flight of Five work. Two of the 19th century locks, idle for more than 100 years, have been restored to original condition in recent years.
The city has $1.51 million in state and federal grants on hand for the work on Lock 68, the second lock from the bottom of the set of five. The Canal Corp. will seek bids from contractors this summer.
