KURYAK KURYAK - James Known for his prowess on the basketball court, his ability to catch baseballs with his bare hands while coaching his sons' teams, a booming voice as a Eucharistic minister and an encyclopedic knowledge of New York state's gasoline supply and demand, James Francis Kuryak passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 at Buffalo General Hospital surrounded by his loved ones. Jim Kuryak was a graduate of Niagara University ('64), where he was captain of their Division 1 basketball team, a 37-year veteran of Mobil Oil, and a great, loyal friend to those he knew. He was most proud of his family of five children, James (Kathy), Mary Beth, Deborah (Art) Bradley, Mark and Timothy from his former spouse Kathleen, and as the beloved husband to the late Josephine Douglas; loving stepfather to Nancy (Brian) Eckert and Jodi (Garry) Vermaas. Born and raised in Lackawanna, Jim was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Lis) Kuryak, brother of John, Michael (Kimberly) and Joseph (Andrea), as well as uncle to many nieces and nephews. In his retirement, Jim loved doting on his grandchildren, Grace and Grant Bradley, Sydney Giardino, Brian and Jackson Eckert, Garret, Jolyn, Shiya, James, William and Luxmi Vermaas, while volunteering his time at the local Florida chapter of the Special Olympics, earning the honor of Volunteer of the Year in 2012. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23rd, from 4-8 pm at WATTENGEL FUNERAL HOME, 533 Meadow Dr. in North Tonawanda. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 24th, at 10:30 am at St. Jude the Apostle, 800 Niagara Falls Blvd. in North Tonawanda.
